인도와 중국의 예술가들은 양국이 겪고 있는 급격한 사회 변화 앞에서, 마치 어떤 특정한 전망대에 올라서서 복잡한 이 세계를 바라보며, 자신이 속한 세계의 ‘풍경’을 큰 틀 속에서 읽고 포착하려고 고심한다. 전시에 선정된 모든 작가의 미적 표현에는 세계에 대한 민감한 의식이 깃들여 있으면서 동시에 그들의 역사와 문화로부터 물려받은 심미적 철학으로 깊게 채색되어 있다.

‘국가 없이 한 지붕 아래로 모여진 사회’로 집약될 수 있는 인도의 현실 속에는 전통적으로 각인된 애착을 끈끈하게 유지하는 서로 다른 문화적 단위들이 근대적 사회 구조와 강하게 공존한다. 현대 인도 작가들은 인도 고유의 ‘위대한 이야기’, 즉 합성과 화해라는 주제를 이끌어내는 문화적 페르소나(Persona)로서의 흔적을 뿌리 깊게 보유하고 있다. 정부의 개방화 정책이 본격적으로 진행되고 있는 중국은 문화 대혁명 후기에 쏟아내던 강렬한 비명을 이제 뒤로 하고, 현실과 삶에 대한 변화된 시각을 미적으로 재규정하고 실체화해야 한다는 긴박감을 느낀다.

In the face of rapid social changes in India and China, artists from the two countries strive to make sense of the whole ‘landscape’, and they encapsulate it as if they were standing on a certain vantage point and looking down at the complex world. Their artistic expressions are ingrained with acute social awareness and are also deeply affected by the aesthetic philosophies that reference their histories and cultures. 

India retains each separate cultural unit with a tradition-ingrained attachment in coexistence with the modern social structure, which can be summed up as ‘under the roof of no nation’.The contemporary Indian artists principally carry the deep-rooted imprint of cultural persona to generate India’s Great Story – synthesis and reconciliation. The Chinese artists, going through the full impact of the government’s implementation of laissez-faire, feel impelled to articulate their perception of another overwhelming change of reality, ‘moving on’ after the scream that had been predominant in the wake of the post-Cultural Revolution.
