Inspired by the ancient poetry of Ovids Metamorphoses, Correggio chose Jupiters liaisons as his subject matter for paintings in the chambers of the ducal palace in Mantua. One of these is a picture of the beautiful nymph Io, wondrously captivated in the embrace of the god. Jupiters countenance and hand, barely visible, shimmer tenderly through the grey mist he created to stay the fleeing footsteps of the shy nymph. The nuances of colour, the mild light and the bright shadow imperceptibly work together to mould and play about the supine, almost melting body of the nymph. Even the clouds seem tangible. In the figure of Io and the sensitive sensuality of her surrender and rapture, Correggio has not only created a nude of unsurpassed charm and subtle eroticism, he has also brought out the deeper meaning of the myth that of the bond of the living and non-living in nature and created his own rare poetry.

코레조

1520년대오 1530년대, 포 강 계곡이 평화로운 도시 파르마는 중요한 예술 중심지였다. 코레조는 다른 화가들고 매우 다른 방법으로, 유려하고 반짝이며 직접적이고 매우 독창적인 양식을 발전시켰다. 부드러운 표현과 놀랍도록 대담한 원근법을 사용한 코레조는 바로크 양식의 선구자였다.

파르마파의 가장 중요한 화가로, 그의 후기 작품은 많은 바로크 및 로코코
미술가들에게 영향을 미쳤다. 최초의 주요 작품으로는 파르마에 있는 산파올로 수도원의 천장에 그린 인문주의적 주제의 우의화들(1519경) 및
파르마의 산조반니에반젤리스타 교회(1520~23)와 파르마 대성당(1526~30)에 있는 프레스코들이 있다. 시적인 느낌을 주는 후기의 뛰어난
유화 작품으로는 〈성녀 카타리나의 신비한 결혼 Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine〉(1526경)이
있다.

『쥬피터와 이오』, 코레조

이 작품은 '쥬피터의 사랑'이라는 연작의 일부이다. 특히 인상적인 것은 주피터가 구름으로 변신하여 님프인 이오를 꿀어안고 입을 맞추어 황홀경에 빠뜨리는 장면이다. 부드럽고 신성한 구름은 님프의 빛나는 육신을 감싸 안은채 그녀을 저항할 수 없는 포옹으로 휘감는 듯이 보인다.
