DAYBREAK AT TENT ISLAND

A blaze of early sun lights up arbutus leaves on the north shore of Tent Island and paints everything in its path. The riot of warm, radiant light makes a strong contrast with the cool, quiet waters of dawn.

FEATHER IN A POOL

A white feather serenely floats across a clear, warm tide pool; a sign of one of the many winged dwellers around Chesterman’s Beach.

BEACH AT MONTAGUE

Clear green water laps up onto white shell sand, surrounded by douglas fir, garry oak and the graceful arbutus. A trail winds along the  water’s edge and herons eagles and the crying gulls make it their home. It is a solace and a haven for the people of Galiano Island and for so many travellers who come the breathe in the beauty and the peace of that sweeping shoreline.

LAGOON COVE

We were struck by the pristine clarity of the water in Lagoon Cove, Pendrell Sound. When it was lit by the morning sun we could easily make out stones deep on the ocean floor far below the surface. It irresistibly calls 'dive in.'

MISTS OVER LANGARA

Mist rolls in along the shoreline of Langara Island, cloaking headlands, islands and the great Shaman's Rock in a dreamlike veil... although the tiny limpets and anemones in tidepools take no notice.

MYSTIC FALLS

A creek, swollen with rainwater, tumbles over a high bluff onto the sand of Mystic Beach. From there it burbles and chuckles its way along to meet the sea.

PASSAGE TO THE SEA

At the far end of West Beach on Calvert Island we found this little rock garden. It had a peaceful, contemplative feeling similar to that of a Japanese garden. It looked like every stone had been placed by an artist's hand. A clear stream caught the sun and sparkled as it trickled across the sand and stones on its passage to the sea.

SAILBOATS OFF BEDDIS BEACH

The perfect conditions for sailing are a lively wind and a sunny day. It is also most enjoyable for those of us on shore to watch the boats skimming along, free as birds on a good breeze. Such were the conditions on this divine May afternoon.

PRIDEAUX HAVEN

With a sudden rustle of wings an eagle leaves its perch on a small rocky island in mist-shrouded Prideaux Haven.

SIWASH-ROCK.st.jpeg

SIWASH ROCK

Seeing Siwash Rock one September day radiant in afternoon sunlight, brought to mind the words of Pauline Johnson: "... it looms up at the entrance of the Narrows, a symmetrical column of solid grey stone. There are no similar formations within the range of vision, or indeed within many a day’s paddle up and down the coast. Amongst all the wonders, the natural beauties that encircle Vancouver, the marvel of mountains... the yawning canyons, the stupendous forest firs and cedars, Siwash Rock stands as distinct, as individual, as if dropped from another sphere."

Ocean-Falls.st.jpeg

OCEAN FALLS

These falls were once the source of power that ran a community throughout its daily life and industry. With the passage of time, most of the people have moved from the town of Ocean Falls and the forest is reclaiming the land. The water however continues to cascade unchanged and indifferent, tumbling and pounding over boulders, endlessly rushing forward to meet the sea.
Ocean Falls is published as a limited edition

CANOE AT KLEMTU

A group of men from the village gathered, launched the huge canoe and paddled a long distance out to meet visitors travelling by canoe from the north.

Watercolour paint is a natural medium for me. It complements and enhances the beauty of this coastal panorama. This region is, after all, a damp, misty part of the world a lot of the time. Water hangs in great silken sheets of fog across mountains and inlets. It ripples and reflects along the shore. The wet, delicate, and raw subtleties of watercolour washes are ideal for conveying the gradation of light within clouds or a summer haze, perfect for suggesting shapes and forms barely visible in shrouded mist or streaking rain. It has a characteristic fresh, organic quality that easily gives the impression of trees and plants, and of rock formations and their textures. It is quick and spontaneous, and has a simplicity to it, requiring few tools. It has a wild quality and although the water can be somewhat controlled, it cannot quite be tamed.
The first impression is always sunlight, the primary concern of everything I paint. No matter what the subject, my process of painting is entirely influenced by light: its direction, the shadows it creates, its honey glow causing everything to hover on a cushion of warm air. Light penetrates things, revealing inner qualities and colours, like the veins in a leaf or the translucence of a shell. It creates halos around them. It makes things shine and flash and reach out to you, come alive. It rings out like sound echoing here and there off everything, filling a place with its reflected glow like a visual symphony. It has a divine loveliness to it. It appears without any human hand causing it to appear. It is just there and a scene is blessed with its rays. My work is to reflect it in my painting.

Many of Carol Evans watercolours portray British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest on the beautiful and rugged pacific shores on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Her ability to create intensity of colour in the watercolour medium and her attention to the subtleties of light are trademarks of her increasingly popular work.

Since 1981 Carol has held 15 very successful one-woman exhibitions in a variety of places; Vancouver, Salt Spring Island, Gabriola Island and Nanaimo. She was invited to participate in a group exhibition by the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, "The Real West Coast" where she was honoured to have her paintings shown along side the work of fellow west coast artists.

She is currently working on new paintings of places along the BC coast that have caught her interest in sharing these sights with you.

We invite you to browse our catalogs of Carol's work and take in a small piece of the breadth and beauty of the West Coast as seen through the eyes of Carol Evans. Enjoy!
